How Data Journalism Can Become a Revenue for News Organizations
How can data journalism be an additional income for the press?

The side effect of journalism is that it is of little value to others, other than journalists who collect and synthesize information. (Exhibit A: collections of booklets, booklets and micro-cassette tapes that were bound with spiral tracks were left at the time I was looking at the newspaper, and dust still piled up in my garage)
But more and more journalists are finding that clean-up, searchable databases are of additional value beyond their journalistic utility – and a better idea is to generate revenue to support publicist coverage It is being revealed.
In February, ProPulica released its data repository, which provides both open and high-end datasets to journalists, researchers, and corporate customers. The original data obtained through public records can be downloaded free of charge; A high-end dataset processed by a propri- cer must pay a fee of $ 200 to $ 1000.
In about four months, more than 500 datasets have been downloaded from the repository, and the free version is the majority. But advanced data sets are generating revenue far in excess of $ 30,000, said Richards Topel, president of ProPerlica.
“500 downloads will probably be more important in terms of mission performance,” he said. But it’s natural that people who have paid for high-end data sets – until now, mainly companies and consultants in the healthcare industry – will become customers again when data is updated. “I think we’re considering this as a successful experience,” he said.
Data journalism is specialized in time-consuming techniques. This requires a lot of work for reporters to find, sort and organize data sets to meaningfully analyze and inform research studies.
The amount of $ 30,000 (or more) created so far by the data warehouse of the Provision never covers the cost of editing and notifying a sophisticated research project such as Dollars for Docs or Prescriber Check up. Nevertheless, as an additional source of income, it is enough to cover the salaries of at least some reporters.
“This is not a major source of income,” said Liangroszki Skjones, a data journalist for Proklica, which manages the data store. However, the finances of journalism are on a declining trend, so it is encouraging to see this as a potential revenue generating resource. “
Monetizing attention
Another way to gain value from a database is to generate revenue through interest, just as the Texas Tribune has put Google micros surveys into their famous data applications since 2011. Tribune visitors who are not listed on the site before paying their employees ‘pay or the details of the inmates’ rulings should be the first to write a simple consumer questionnaire. (Or share pages in Google Plus)
Micro-surveys do not appear in data projects that have already been funded by specific grants, such as public school explorers – who receive money for each question answered by the Tribune. However, the Tribune gained a few thousand dollars a month by adding a survey that would reveal a database of officials’ salaries and information on the inmates. (In June 2014, the survey income totaled $ 17,565.)
But if we capture the value of it, we can see that data journalism is well worth beyond its main investigative purpose. This should be borne in mind by all heads of media to ensure that they have a wide range of sources of income for their long-term survival
Grozosky Jones says, “In the end, we are making products. Just as people make television news, newspapers, and radio articles, our database is a finished product. We invest time and effort and especially money. So I’m happy with the results we have created, and it’s great when people see that people – even those outside of journalism – are trying to pay for a lot of the effort we’ve put into this, “
